Baseball: Millsaps scores late to down Panthers 7-5

JACKSON, Miss. - Millsaps pushed across two runs in the eighth inning to down LaGrange 7-5 at Twenty Field on Friday. It was the second straight loss for the Panthers, now 5-4.

Coach David Kelton started four freshmen in the game. The four had nine of the Panthers' 12 hits. Rhett Mixon, in his first start, was 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Judd Moore, also making his first start, had a pair of doubles and scored two runs. Jack Layrisson scored a run and had two hits. McKinley Erves had an RBI single.

The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Erves and James Poropatic had run-scoring hits in the inning. The Majors (3-2) came back to take a 3-2 lead off starter Richie Post.

LC tied the game 3-3 on Mixon's RBI double in the fourth. The Majors retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Brennan Ducote led off the inning with a solo home run off Post. It was the first home run allowed by the Panthers this season.

The Panthers tied the game with a run in the fifth and another in the sixth. Austin Jones' base hit drove in the run in the fifth. Moore scored on an error to tie the game in the sixth.

Gibson Bittner threw three scorless innings in relief of Post before running into trouble in the eight. He allowed the go-ahead runs, before giving way to Austin Fain and Zach English to close out the inning. 

The Panthers face Belhaven on Saturday and Berry on Sunday as part of the Millsaps College Tournament.
