Baseball: Panthers down Sewanee 7-1 to complete three-game sweep

SEWANEE, Tenn. - Eric Morell threw five scoreless innings and was backed up by an 11-hit attack as LaGrange topped Sewanee 7-1 on Sunday at McGee Field.

The victory gave the Panthers (3-0) a sweep of the season-opening three-game series against the Tigers (0-3).

Morell, a senior, surrendered just two hits, while not walking a batter and striking out five. Austin Brown, Zach English, and Toby King allowed only an unearned run over the final four innings.

"Morell set the tone early. He was very effective with all of his pitches," said Coach David Kelton. "He had great tempo and command of the strike zone. We were able to get into their bullpen and score some runs.

"This weekend was good to be able to go on the road and have some success. A good start to the season."

The Panthers got two runs in the third inning and another in the fourth to go up 3-0. Cain Sauls had an RBI double in the third, and Tavin Thompson's double in the fourth drove in another run.

Leading 3-1, the Panthers added to their lead in each of the last three innings. Casey Bell, Blake Butcher, and Joe Pradat all had an RBI singles. James Maxwell's double in the ninth drove in the final Panther run.

In the three games, the Panthers outcored the Tigers 19-2 over the last three innings.

Chad Pigg had four hits in the series, all doubles. Butcher finished the series 6-for-14 with a home run and four RBIs.

The Panthers play at Berry in a non-conference game Wednesday.
