Baseball: Panthers close out regular season with loss to Emory
LaGrange ended the regular season with a 10-5 to Emory on Wednesday in Williamson Stadium at Cleaveland Field. The Panthers are now 14-25, while the Eagles improved to 24-11.
The Panthers host the GSAC Championship Tournament beginning Friday. The Panthers are the third seed and will face second-seeded Piedmont at 7 p.m. Top-seeded Huntingdon and fourth-seeded Maryville open the tournament at 3 p.m.
Emory outhit the Panthers 12-5 in the game. James Hall had a two-run single, while Austin Schmidt had the Panthers only extra base hit, a pinch-hit double in the ninth inning.
Tyler Brooks (2-1) started and took the loss for the Panthers. Brooks allowed four runs in 2-2/3 innings. He was one of six pitchers used in the game by the Panthers.
Matt Savage allowed two unearned runs in 1-1/3 innings of work. Henry Jacobs gave up three runs in an inning. Matt Steele threw two scoreless innings and Derek O'Kelley had a scoreless inning. Josh Bricker surrendered a run in the ninth inning.
Emory took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. The Panthers tied the game in their half of the inning. Brent Kinsey dropped a double down the right field line. He moved over to third on a fly out and scored as Cameron Fields grounded out to first.
The Eagles came back with three runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth to up their lead to 6-1. In the bottom of the fourth the Panthers loaded the bases on three walks. Hall lined a single to center to drive in two runs to make it 6-3.
Trailing 9-3, the Panthers got a run in the fifth inning. Jim Reed walked and Evin Eichelberger singled to lead off the inning. Reed moved over to third on a ground out and scored on David Miller's base hit to center field.
The Panthers got their final run in the ninth inning. Schmidt led off the inning with his double down the left field line. Adam Hampton reached on an error as Schmidt came around to score for the final 10-5 margin.
