Baseball: Huntingdon edges Panthers in opener of GSAC series

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Huntingdon edged LaGrange 4-3 in the opening game of a weekend GSAC series Friday at Posey Field. The Panthers fell to 4-3 in the GSAC and 13-20 overall.

The Panthers had eight hits in the game but left 11 men on base. Evin Eichelberger, Cody Muren and Josh Shiver had two hits each for the Panthers.

Huntingdon (22-10, 5-2 GSAC) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning off starter Mason Webster (2-5). Webster allowed three earned runs and six hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out six.

The Panthers came back with a run in the second inning and another in the third to go up 2-1. Shiver reached on an error to lead off the second and later scored on a base hit by Linwood Roberds. In the third, Muren led off with a triple and scored as David Miller beat out a two-out infield hit.

The Hawks tied the game with a run in their half of the third. They added a run in the sixth and one more in the seventh off reliever Kenneth Strack to build a 4-2 lead.

The Panthers got within a run in the eighth inning. They loaded the bases with one out against starter Grant Lowman (5-1) on a single by Shiver and back-to-back walks to Doug Scherer and Miles Lee.

Tyler Spivey relieved Lowman after the walk to Lee. He struck out Roberds but Eichelberger drew a walk to force in Shiver to make it 4-3. Spivey got out of the inning by getting Muren to hit into a force play at second.

In the ninth, Brandon Espinosa was hit by a pitch with one out. But Spivey got Miller to ground into a game-ending double play.

The two teams play Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. CDT.
