Baseball: Centre tops Panthers to split two-game series
Centre topped LaGrange 6-2 on Wednesday in Williamson Stadium at Cleaveland Field. The win enabled the Colonels (10-11) to split the two-game series with the Panthers (8-15).
Derek O'Kelly (0-2) started and took the loss for the Panthers. He pitched three innings, allowing two runs on four hits, while walking two.
Daniel Adams gave up three unearned runs in getting the first two outs of the fourth inning. Matt Savage relieved Adams, pitching 3-1/3 scoreless innings. Matt Steele closed the game out, allowing a run in two innings of work.
Tommy Munoz, the third pitcher of the game for Centre, got the win. Munoz allowed a hit in 2-2/3 innings. Bryan Bascom blanked the Panthers over the last two innings.
Centre scored twice in the third to go up 2-0. The Colonels came back in the third and took advantage of two Panther errors to score three unearned runs to make it 5-0.
The Panthers had five of their six hits in the fifth inning to score their two runs. Brent Kinsey had the first of five straight base hits with one out. Lynwood Roberds and Jon Brock had RBI singles to cut the Colonels' lead to 5-2. Munoz relieved Trey Litsey and got the final two outs of the inning to get the Colonels out of the jam.
The Panthers put two men on in the seventh but could not push across a run. In the ninth, they again put two runners on but could not score. The Panthers left nine men on base in the game.
The Panthers host Maryville in a three-game GSAC weekend series beginning Friday at 7 p.m. The two team play Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m.
