Baseball: Millsaps evens weekend series with Panthers
Millsaps pushed across two runs in the ninth inning to beat LaGrange 9-7 in Williamson Stadium at Cleaveland Field on Saturday. The Majors (11-8) evened the weekend series with the Panthers (7-13).
Millsaps took advantage of two Panther errors in the ninth to break a 7-7 tie. The Panthers committed three errors in the game, leading to three unearned runs.
Isaiah Whitfield (0-2) took the loss. The first two batters in the ninth to face Whitfield reached on the errors. Josh Bricker, Matt Savage and Henry Jacobs followed Whitfield in the inning.
Kenny Strack started the game for the Panthers. He allowed seven runs, six earned, in five innings of work. Tyler Brooks threw two scoreless innings and Derek O'Kelley also had a scoreless inning.
Millsaps scored two runs off Strack in the first inning to lead 2-0. The Panthers tied the game with a run in the first and another in the second.
David Miller's two-out double scored Jon Brock in the first inning. In the second, Brandon Espinosa reached on a two-out error that allowed Doug Scherer to score to tie the game 2-2.
The Majors came back with four runs in the top of the third to take a 6-2 lead. Wes Perkins had an RBI double in the innings.
The Panthers got two of the runs back in the fourth inning. Cameron Eison led off the inning with a single and Espinosa reached on an error on a bunt attempt to put runners on second and third. Evin Eichelberger followed with a two-run single to right center to make it 6-4.
Perkins hit a two-out solo home run in the fifth to give Millsaps a 7-4 lead. The Panthers came back to tie the game over the next four innings.
The Panthers got a run in their half of the fifth without benefit of a hit. Anthony Iannetta walked, stole second, moved over to third on a sacrifice and scored on a balk.
In the sixth inning, the Panthers put runners on second and third with one out. Miller grounded out to second, scoring Eichelberger, who had walked to lead off the inning.
The Panthers tied the game in the eighth. They loaded the bases with one out. Miller was hit by a pitch to drive in pinch-runner James Hall with the tying run.
In the ninth inning, the first two batters for the Majors reached on errors. Bricker relieved Whitfield with runners on second and third and one out. Ryan Zemke, who had four RBIs in the game, bounced a single up the middle to put the Majors up 9-7.
In the bottom of the inning, Brent Kinsey reached second on an error to lead off the inning. He moved over to third but was stranded as the game ended.
The two teams conclude their weekend series Sunday at 2 p.m.
