Baseball: Piedmont holds off Panthers to complete sweep

DEMOREST, Ga. - Piedmont built an early lead and held off LaGrange for a 7-5 GSAC win at Loudermilk Field on Sunday. The win enabled the Lions (21-12, 5-1 GSAC) to sweep the three-game weekend series from the Panthers (16-17, 1-5 GSAC).

The loss was the 10th straight for the Panthers, all on the road. The Panthers host Huntingdon next Friday for the start of a three-game GSAC series.

Robbie Williams (4-4) took the loss for the Panthers. Williams allowed all seven runs on 11 hits in 4-2/3 innings.

Mason Webster relieved Williams in the fifth inning. He threw 3-1/3 scoreless innings, giving up three hits, walking one and striking out three.

The Panthers had nine hits in the game. Brent Kinsey and David Miller each had two hits. Anthony Iannetta and Jordan Martinec each had two RBI.

The Panthers got a run in the top of the first inning to go up 1-0. They loaded the bases with no outs and Martinec walked to force in Miller with the first run of the game.

Piedmont answered with four runs in its half of the first and two more in the second to take a 6-1 lead. The Panthers got two runs back in the third inning.

The Panthers loaded the bases and Martinec walked for the second time, scoring Miller again. Travis Ross brought in Robbie Shelton with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-3.

Trailing 7-3, the Panthers closed the gap with two runs in the fifth inning. Iannetta drove in both runs with a two-out single.

The Panthers left two runners on both the sixth and seventh innings. They were retired in order in the eighth and ninth innings to close out the game.
